Visually, this Field Notes design offers a lot: a striking "Antarctic Survey Orange" on the front cover and "Polar Night Black" on the back, complemented by a subtle varnish effect featuring a topographic map of Antarctica. The inside pages are printed on dot-grid paper in a light gray.

The real innovation, however, lies in the paper – although "paper" is almost an understatement. The entire notebook is made of Yupo Synthetic Paper, an impressively tear-resistant and waterproof material produced from polypropylene granules in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Most people will probably never test the limits of these notebooks, but the Antarctic map is neither exaggeration nor coincidence. Field Notes actually sent the Expedition Edition to the South Pole in October 2013, together with explorer Ben Saunders, who, with his team, retraced Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated route to the Pole and back on foot and without support.

Note: Synthetic paper is not porous and therefore does not absorb ink as well as conventional paper. Ballpoint pens, pencils, or fine-tip Sharpies are best suited for this purpose.
